CAN YOU DYE AN OLD KILIMANJARO JACKET?

I've an older Firstgear Kilimanjaro jacket that I simply cannot destroy. I love the old thing and it still serves me well so it occurred to me that I could perhaps dye the faded red color in order to kinda restore some of its' former glory. I'm in need of any advice as to how and if this can be done on this synthetic material successfully. Thanks in advance!

Re: CAN YOU DYE AN OLD KILIMANJARO JACKET?

My guess would be no.... I had an old Kilimanjaro, too and also hated to part with it... It was an old friend.

That being said... I (nd many others) love the look of an ancient, well worn jacket.. The "patina" says to the world.. "this guy has been living life..".. My 2 doubloons

Re: CAN YOU DYE AN OLD KILIMANJARO JACKET?

Boxerboy, The Kilimanjaro is made of 400D & 650D nylon for the most part. I have read online that RIT makes a new dye specifically for synthetics and the process requires placing the garment in boiling water?!! That seems a tad counterintuitive to me...boiling water and nylon!! I'm curious to know if anyone has tried this and with what, if any, success. Oh, and Jerry, I am a registered member of the "If it continues to work well use it!" club, but with the recent purchase of a new shiny red bike.....

Thanks
Ken

Re: CAN YOU DYE AN OLD KILIMANJARO JACKET?

Why not give the dye/boil thing a try? If it fails and stuffs the jacket, then at least you tried and you'll still have something to wear fishing!

Jackets are like bikes, one more is the correct number.

I wonder if boiling water will hurt the waterproof coating?
Is the jacket all red, or red and black?

Re: CAN YOU DYE AN OLD KILIMANJARO JACKET?

Don't know about Rit but the other dyeing methods for nylon are more in the 140-180F.Not even close to boiling temp.

https://m.wikihow.com/Dye-Nylon?amp=1

Food coloring is interesting.Commercial food suppliers should have Red in the 500ml bottles?

Got a big pot?

Old? I think No 7 is still legal according to the FDA but not for food?

FDA?

Old Nylon never dyes. It just fades away.

It would seem that the cultural reference is lost on you.
Its a play on Douglas MacArthur's speech I think given at west point.
AN old soldier never dies he just fades away.

Oh and Cordura is largely a nylon based product.
For the price of the jacket and having viewed the less than handsome results of one of the linked pages Id trash it and buy new is possible.
