CalSci sreen for the GT

I got my x-tall (XL) screen last Friday. Having the screen now, maybe I better had chosen the tall (large) version.

Dimensions of my screen:
Width (widest point): 53,5 cm (21", the site mentions 18")
Width (top): 40 cm (15¾", the site mentions 14.5")
Height: 63 cm measured from the lowest point of the screen, which is higher positioned than the BMW screen. Due to this the top is also higher than the BMW screen. The CalSci site mentions 24.5", but that will probably the height if the bottom side would have the same shape as the BMW screen.

This is what the difference is between the BMW tall screen and the CalSci XL screen:

Seen from the side there is also a difference noticable. Where the BMW screen follows a curve, there the CalSci screen is nearly straight. The CalSci screen guides the wind better over the helmet (instead of against it).

BMW tall screen in highest position:

CalSci XL screen in highest position:

Got to test the screen today. Took the GT for a ride, mainly on the highway with speeds varying between 60 to 85 mph (100 - 135 km/h). Finally I had silence around the helmet!! I have the screen nearly in the lowest position. I'm just looking over the screen.

But is it all better? Alas! Although the CalSci screen is made of impact resistant Acrylate, it is very sensitive to scratches. Mounting the screen is a job for more than two hands if you want to prevent it from scratching. You have to take that into account as well when you clean the screen. Also, the screen is made from 3/16" (4.5 mm) plastic; I don't know how it will handle higher speeds. Will it break (like the CeeBaileys)? Will it hold? As I understood, CB has changed back to 6 mm (0.24") due to this problem. At 135 km/h (85 mph) the screen held perfectly, steady as can be.

I am very satisfied with this screen. Imagine how ecstatic I would be if the screen was made of 6 mm scratch resistant polycarbonate!!!. Mark, are you still reading?

Re: CalSci sreen for the GT

I had one of the CB's that cracked, I drove up to Sacramento and got a Cal-Sci. I does not flex nearly as much as the CB, me thinks it will not crack....

Re: CalSci sreen for the GT

I ran a CalSci screen on the GT for a while. It worked very well solo, and gave great protection and smoother air flow without being a huge barn door. Its biggest downside is that the material can scratch rather easily, so you have to be very careful cleaning it.

I eventually went with the full AeroFlow setup which works well in a huge variety of weather conditions, but for solo, sporty riders the CalSci is a good choice.

Re: CalSci sreen for the GT

Just tried the Ztechnic V Stream. What a miserable disappointment. It was the tall and extra wide one.In the highest and quietest position it felt like someone was pushing forward on my back and my helmet was bouncing around like a bobble head doll. This started around 60mph and by the time I got to 80 it felt like I was pushing a barn door in front of me and the front end started moving around.I had one on my LT and had no problems.I tried lowering it a little at a time but nothing seemed to help.If anyone buys one make sure your dealer will take it back, fortunately mine did.

Re: CalSci sreen for the GT

Anyone out there who has tried the small ZTechnik V Stream ? Sometimes just small changes can do a lot of difference, a bigger screen is not necessarily a guarantee for better protection I think.
